The Municipal Council determines the political goals for the various municipal operations, the municipal budget, and economic long-term policies etc. The Council has 81 Councillors, of which 48 represent the “Alliance for Jönköping". The Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterna, S) and the Left Party (Vänsterpartiet, V) together have 33 seats. Chair of the Council is Anna Mårtensson (FP).
The Municipal Executive Board leads and coordinates work with the municipal overall goals and policies, and directs all the municipal operations. The Board consists of 15 members. Chair of the Board is Local Government Commissioner Acko Ankarberg-Johansson (KD).
Apart from the Municipal Council and the Executive Board, the municipal organisation consists of 15 different boards and committees, and includes 10 district councils.
In addition, there are some 500 committed part-time politicians actively working on the various boards and committees. Of these, 5 elected representatives, i.e. the Local Government Commissioners, work on a full-time basis.
