Newly arrived children and students

Here is information for the guardians of newly arrived children and students. You will find out about the registration process and the procedure for school start.

Newly arrived pupils of primary school age begin their schooling with an evaluation at the Reception Department (Mottagningsenheten in Swedish). Pupils of high school age are accepted at Bäckadalsgymnasiet.

Pedagogical evaluation applies to all students who have come to Sweden in the last four years; thus, according to the Swedish National Agency for Education, are defined, as newly arrived students. The initial assessment will be carried out so that the principal is able to make an informed decision about the placement of a newly arrived student, who will be placed in a grade and teaching group, and within two months of him or her being enrolled in the Swedish school.

Pre-school

When a newly arrived family with pre-school children wants a pre-school place, they should always contact the Reception Department. An enrolment interview will be conducted there. The purpose of the conversation is partly for the municipality to gain information about the child, and partly for the family to get initial information about pre-school in Jönköping municipality.

Elementary / Primary school

A newly arrived student will, within two months of his or her acceptance into the school system, be placed in a grade that is suitable; also, the student will be placed in a teaching group within the same time period. The student’s age, prior knowledge and personal circumstances are taken into consideration during this process.

After primary school, the student either goes on to a national upper secondary program or an introductory program.

Secondary school and language introduction program

Newly arrive students of high school age will enrol at the reception class at Bäckadalsgymnasiet; this process will take place during a scheduled conversation with a teacher and possibly an interpreter. After evaluation, the student is placed in the language introduction program at Bäckadalsgymnasiet.

On completion of the program, the student can apply to other upper secondary school programs, folk high school or adult education; alternatively, find employment.

Registration for newly arrived children and students

To register children of pre-school age or pupils of primary school age, report to the assistant principal (biträdande chef mottagningsenheten) at the reception department.

Registration for high school age students is made to the reception class teacher at Bäckadalsgymnasiet.

Information about pre-school and school for newly arrived children and young people from Ukraine

Children and young people who have been granted a residence permit with temporary protection, or who are asylum seekers, will be received in the school as soon as it is appropriate. Personal circumstances are taken into consideration, but they should be accepted no later than one month after arrival.

Children over the age of 1 year have the right to pre-school on the same terms as Swedish citizens; the child is guaranteed a pre-school place within four months.

  1. Register the child/young person as a refugee with the Swedish Migration Agency.
  2. Then contact the relevant reception department to apply for a place in pre-school or school.
  3. The child/young person's school knowledge is evaluated by personnel at the reception department.
  4. The child/young person is placed in a class at a school in the municipality. Placement is based, to the best possible extent, on knowledge evaluation and proximity to the child/young person’s residence.
