Tips if you are planning to travel by ferry

Summertime

During the summer the ferry is extremely busy. There could be queues and long waiting times. Plan your journey and set off well in advance to avoid long queues. The departures marked with an H in the timetable are particularly busy. A good tip is to travel during the morning. Alternatively, you could all travel together in one car, or park your car and travel as a pedestrian.

Be prepared

Be prepared to drive on board the ferry as soon as it arrives. Vehicles are allowed on board in the order they arrive at the ferry point. Follow the instructions of the crew members. Buses have priority.

Remain alert

Remain alert to what is happening around you, and do not use your mobile when driving on board.

Drive close to the vehicle in front of you

Drive right up to the gates or close to the vehicle in front of you. This will allow more vehicles to be carried. Exceptions: Disabled vehicles, where there must be a gap between the vehicles.

Turn off the engine and lights

Once you have parked on board, turn off the engine and apply the handbrake. Turn off all the lights on the car, particularly during the evening. Vehicle lights can dazzle the captain of the ferry and other vessels close by.

Motorcyclists

Make sure your motorcycle is parked safely and there is no risk of it falling over if the ferry were to roll.

Foot passengers and cyclists

When you go on board you must follow the markings along one side of the ferry. Cyclists must lead their bikes on board. All our larger ferries have an enclosed seating area beside the car deck to protect passengers from the weather. Once the ferry has docked, follow the markings that will lead you ashore. Be careful not to step out into the vehicle lanes when vehicles are driving on and off the ferry.
