Gränna Church

The first church in Gränna was built as far back as the 12th century. It was rebuilt several times over the centuries, eventually in a Baroque style.

In January 1889, large parts of the church were destroyed in a fire. Despite this, parts of the altarpiece, a medieval communion cabinet, a few chandeliers and several works of art were saved and are now preserved in the church.

The present church was consecrated in 1895. It is built in the Neo-Baroque style and is recognisable by its characteristic volute gables. The church was built on the remains of the earlier church, which was designed in the 1680s by the then governor, Count Erik Dahlberg. The result is a church that brings together traces of many eras – from the Middle Ages to the late 19th century.
