Gyllene uttern

Gyllene Uttern opened in the summer of 1933. The building was designed by Captain Rolf Gyllensvaan, whose family ran the hotel until 1969.

From the beginning, Gyllene Uttern was something out of the ordinary – a hotel that went on to set new standards and became a forerunner of today’s motels.

When motorists arrived in 1933, they were greeted by a main building in the traditional Swedish folk style. Out in the countryside stood a dozen or so small cottages, adapted for the car-travelling guests of the time. The Gyllensvaan company continued to develop the complex, and by 1935 a ruin-style building was completed, connected to a half-timbered house. A castle chapel was built within the ruin, which was intended, remarkably, for so-called drive-in weddings.

Two years later, the ruin had been completely transformed and converted into a castle. At the same time, the main building was fitted with its characteristic stepped gables – details that still today contribute to Gyllene Uttern’s distinctive and slightly fairy-tale-like appearance.
