Karpdammarna

Karpdammarna are historic fish ponds dating from the 17th century, situated in the leafy oak forest north of the ruins of Visingsborg Castle.
It was common practice to construct fish ponds at large castles and manor houses during this period, particularly amongst the upper nobility. Carp was a prized source of food, not least because it could be kept alive in ponds and thus served fresh at court meals.
Today, there are no fish in the ponds, but the site still tells the story of how nature was used as part of the castle’s sustenance and daily life. Here, traces of the economic management of the Great Power era meet the tranquil cultural landscape that has slowly taken over.
