Oscarshöjd (Oscar’s Hill)

In 1895, King Oscar II visited Gränna. The people of Gränna had decided that it was at this location, with its sweeping views, that the King should be honoured.
A pavilion was erected for the occasion to host the celebrations.
However, the site had been used for gatherings and festivities long before that. In the mid-19th century, a building known as the Temple of Mercury stood here, and the area was then known as Kyrkkullen (the Church Hill) – as it was situated directly above the church. Several decades later, the site was given its current name, Oscarshöjd.
The pavilion, erected in honour of the king, fell into disrepair over time and was demolished in 1959. In 1985, the current pavilion was built by the Grenna Local Heritage Society. Every year, the society ensures that the site is illuminated by a beautiful Advent star during the Advent season.
