Rökinge Boathouse

Båthus med brygga ut i vattnet.

The Rökinge Boathouse illustrates how life on Visingsö was, for a long time, closely linked to Lake Vättern.

Farming and fishing were important, complementary livelihoods, and boathouses played a central role in everyday life. It is here that boats, fishing gear and nets used for fishing in the lake were stored.

Fishing was a significant part of people’s livelihoods, providing food for households and goods to sell. Lake Vättern also offered a means of transport and contact with the outside world. Boathouses were built close to the shore and adapted to both the local landscape and climatic conditions.

Rökinge Boathouse is a clear example of the building culture of the historic farming community and shows how people made use of and adapted to nature’s resources. The site provides a solid picture of what work, livelihoods and everyday life were like before the advent of modern society.
