Stone circles

Stone circles are a type of ancient monument, usually considered to be graves. It is not known for certain why these graves were placed so openly and conspicuously in rows or groups.
It is possible that they also had ritual or symbolic significance. In some cases, they may have been used as sites for assemblies or other gatherings.
The location of the stone circles may seem unusual. They are often situated high up in the landscape, but here they are located closer to the shore. As a result, coastal erosion has already claimed parts of the site. However, it is still possible to make out the stone circles and their shape even today.
The stone circles raise questions about how people in the past used the landscape – for burials, meetings or ceremonial acts – and serve as a reminder of how much of the ancient past remains open to interpretation.
