Amalia Erikson

Subject: Amalia Erikson
Artist: Lena Lervik
Material: Bronze
Location: The western side of Södra Park
The bronze sculpture in the western part of Södra Park depicts Amalia Erikson – a widow and single mother who began baking traditional Swedish polkagrisar to support herself and her daughter. It was she who made the hard peppermint-flavoured sweet famous throughout Sweden, laying the foundations for what is perhaps Gränna’s best-known tradition.
The sculpture was created by the artist Lena Lervik. Every year on International Women’s Day, Amalia is adorned with flowers. The Amalia Prize is also presented on this day – awarded to a local female entrepreneur, in the spirit of Amalia Erikson
