Bronze sculpture in the center of a fountain, surrounded by greenery.

Artist: Axel Wallenberg
Year created: 1952
Sculpture: Bronze

On Munkplan in Jönköping stands a bronze sculpture created by Axel Wallenberg. The work is a tribute to Knut Ottonin Ljungkvist, founder of Munksjö AB – a company of great significance in Jönköping’s industrial history.

The sculpture was donated to the city by Munksjö AB as a memorial. Today, it still stands in its original location, not as a dominant monument, but as part of the city’s rhythm – at the heart of the daily flow on Munkplan.

It is a work that tells the stories of enterprise and entrepreneurship and how the efforts of one person can leave a mark on a city.

Axel Gereon Wallenberg (1898–1996) was born in Nässjö and became a recognised Swedish sculptor, medal designer and draughtsman. He is particularly known for his portrait sculptures, including those of Gustaf Svensson, Anders Henriksson and Ragnar Hoppe. He has also created ecclesiastical works for Swedish churches, including Slättåkra, Tranemo and Sollentuna.
