(Memorial to Björn Afzelius)

Illustration: Tord Hägg
Year created: 2000
Medium: Bronze relief
A bronze relief honours the memory of Björn Afzelius – one of Sweden’s most popular singer-songwriters – born in Jönköping municipality in 1947. The memorial, created the year after his death, is a tribute to his life and work.
Björn Afzelius became known through his participation in the political prog band Hoola Bandoola Band, but his big breakthrough came as a solo artist. Through his lyrics, music and strong social commitment, he became a voice for solidarity and justice. His songs were often about the fight against oppression, but also about hope, love and courage.
About the artist
The illustration for the relief was created by Tord Hägg, who studied at KV Konstskola and Malmö Konstskola Forum. He also portrayed Björn Afzelius for the CD Den röda tråden – a work in which music and image meet.
