Spår av eld (Traces of fire)

Artist: Erik Vallbo
Year of creation: 2023
Placement: Pedestrian tunnel – west side, Tändsticksområdet Jönköping
Technique and material: Backlit sheet metal
About the artwork
The west side of the pedestrian tunnel to Tändsticksområdet (Matchstick quarter) in Jönköping has been designed in backlit sheet metal that will acquire a rusty patina over time. The motifs are taken from historic matchboxes that were manufactured in Jönköping from the mid-19th century until the 1970s. The motifs include familiar elements from Jönköping’s urban environment combined with animals and nature from faraway countries. The motifs also reflect the design language and aesthetics of the previous century, where detailed motifs are interspersed with abstract patterns.
Motifs from the matchboxes also appear in Brånebacken square in the eastern part of the area, where the same artist has designed a pathway.
